Sustainable sawn timber

Since 2020, our sawn timber production has been fully powered by renewable energy. Every product that leaves our sawmills is produced without fossil fuels, resulting in extremely low emissions from our production processes.

Thanks to UPM's extensive product range, wood is used efficiently and further processed to a high degree. Nothing goes to waste, as leftover wood from the sawmills is used to produce biofuels, biocomposites, and even wood-based hydrogels for wound care and cell cultivation.

No harmful chemicals are used in our manufacturing processes, and our packaging is made from recyclable plastic. In some markets, such as Finland, we have even achieved a closed-loop system for our packaging materials.

We are continually striving to reduce our emissions in logistics by increasing the use of rail transport and adopting the latest technologies, such as our LNG-powered vessels and electric vehicles, which help minimize environmental impacts.

Our business is based on the continuous growth of forests. Well-managed forests are essential for the natural carbon and water cycles, biodiversity, and the well-being of local communities. Through sustainable forestry practices, we can secure the diverse benefits that forests provide. We are committed to sustainable forest management, ensuring that forests grow more than they are harvested.

We have been monitoring the biodiversity of our forests since 1998, and our goal is to continuously improve the natural diversity in our forests. We are committed to having a net positive impact on biodiversity by creating buffer zones, doubling the amount of deadwood and deciduous trees left in our forests. We have even tied our financing costs to these metrics

Additionally, UPM produces high-quality native seedlings at our own nursery garden in Joroinen. Our nursery garden is unique, as UPM is the only Finnish forest industry operator that grows its own seedlings. To enhance biodiversity, UPM aims for a natural species distribution by planting also deciduous trees.

High-quality products and services 

Sustainably produced and high-quality UPM sawn timber is an excellent choice for even the most demanding applications. All our products are sawn in Finland from domestic pine and spruce. We use a certified wood tracking system to ensure that the timber comes from sustainably managed forests and is legally sourced. Our sawmills are certified with PEFC (PEFC/02-34-05) and FSC™ Chain of Custody (FSC C086359) certifications. Our extensive sales and logistics network across Europe, Asia, and the MENA region ensures high-quality service.

We operate reliably

Reliability is everything to us. UPM's own timber procurement ensures that our mills consistently receive the raw materials they need. Skilled personnel and modern equipment keep the wheels turning smoothly. We make more than 20 000 wood purchases annually and receive more than 250 truckloads of timber daily. This allows us to provide sawn timber whenever it is needed.
